The garage gym that is unusable by 9 a.m. The casita the main AC never reaches. The Arizona room that was never on the duct system in the first place. The back-office bedroom that runs five degrees hotter than the rest of the house. All over the Valley, the answer to these rooms has become the same: a ductless mini-split. And right after people pick one out, the next question shows up: do I need an electrician for this, or does the AC company handle everything?
The short answer is both, and the electrical side is the part that surprises people. Here is what a mini-split actually needs from your electrical system, and who does what on a clean installation.
A mini-split is not a window unit you plug into the wall. Nearly every system gets a dedicated circuit from your panel, and most systems 12,000 BTU and up run on 208/230 volts, the same class of power as your dryer or your central AC. Some small 9,000 to 12,000 BTU units come in 115-volt versions, but the majority of what gets installed in Arizona, and anything cooling a garage in July, is 230 volts.
The exact breaker and wire size come off the unit's nameplate, which lists the minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) and the maximum overcurrent protection (MOCP). That nameplate, not a generic chart, is what your electrician sizes to. As a rough guide, though: a 9,000 to 12,000 BTU unit at 230 volts typically wants a 15-amp breaker, an 18,000 BTU unit around 20 amps, a 24,000 BTU unit around 25 amps, and a 36,000 BTU unit around 30 amps, with wire gauge sized to match.
The disconnect. Code requires a shutoff within sight of the outdoor unit, so a tech servicing it can kill the power without walking to your panel. It is a small box on the wall next to the condenser, and it is not optional.
The whip and the right wire. The connection from the disconnect to the unit runs through a weatherproof whip, and the circuit itself has to be the correct gauge for the breaker protecting it. Undersized wire on a compressor load in Arizona heat is exactly how insulation cooks.
Surge protection. Mini-splits are inverter-driven machines, and the control board is the most expensive part in the box. Between monsoon lightning and grid switching, Valley homes see real surges every summer. Panel capacity. This is the big one. A mini-split is often the third or fourth major load added to a panel that was sized decades ago, right behind the EV charger and the hot tub. Sometimes there is room, sometimes the panel is physically full, and sometimes a load calculation shows the service itself is at its limit. Adding a new circuit is permitted electrical work in Valley cities, and the mechanical side of the install is typically permitted too. On a properly run mini-split job, the HVAC contractor sizes and mounts the equipment, runs the refrigerant lineset, pulls the vacuum, charges the system, and commissions it. The licensed electrician runs the dedicated circuit, sets the breaker, mounts the disconnect, and makes the final electrical connections. When one crew quietly does the other crew's half, that is where we see undersized breakers, missing disconnects, and circuits daisy-chained off whatever was nearby.

Every house is different, but for most Valley homes the electrical package for a single-zone mini-split, meaning the dedicated circuit, breaker, disconnect, and whip, lands somewhere in the several-hundred-to-low-four-figures range depending on how far the unit sits from the panel and how the wire has to get there. A detached workshop or a full panel changes that conversation, which is why we look before we quote. The one number that matters is the free one: have an electrician confirm your panel can take the load before you buy equipment.
Call a licensed electrician before you order a mini-split if your panel is more than a couple of decades old, if the destination is a garage, casita, or workshop far from the panel, or if the installer's quote says "electrical by others" and nobody has told you what that means. And call us afterward if an existing mini-split trips its breaker, runs off an extension of another circuit, or has no disconnect at the outdoor unit, because all three are fixable and worth fixing.
