Flickering tubes, a persistent hum, or a fixture that takes three tries to come on are all the same conversation: the ballast is going. At The Wire Guy Electric, we repair and replace fluorescent lighting for commercial spaces across the Valley, and we will tell you honestly when repair is the wrong call.
This is the real decision, and it is worth thinking about rather than defaulting.
Replacing a ballast makes sense when you have a small number of failures in a fixture set that is otherwise in good shape, or when budget timing means a full conversion has to wait.
Converting to LED usually makes more sense when you are replacing ballasts repeatedly across a space, when the fixtures are old enough that more failures are certain, or when the space has high ceilings where every service call means a lift. In that last case the labor of ongoing maintenance frequently outweighs the cost of converting.
There is also a hard reality worth planning around: fluorescent lamp and ballast availability has been shrinking, and specific tube types get harder to source over time. Lighting work is disruptive by nature since the lights go out to do it. We schedule around business hours, work area by area, and keep the space usable throughout. For a full-building sweep, doing it in one coordinated visit is cheaper and less disruptive than handling failures one at a time as they happen.
