Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel Electrical in the Phoenix Valley

Kitchens and baths are the two remodels we do most, and they are also the two where the electrical is most likely to be underestimated. Once the cabinets come off the wall and the tile comes up, what is behind them is frequently not what anybody assumed. At The Wire Guy Electric, we do remodel electrical for homeowners, designers, and general contractors across Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, and Queen Creek.

What a Kitchen Remodel Needs

A modern kitchen is one of the densest electrical spaces in a house, and older Valley kitchens were not built for it. A typical remodel involves:

• Small appliance circuits serving the countertop receptacles, which in most older kitchens means adding circuits rather than reusing what is there
• Dedicated circuits for the refrigerator, dishwasher, disposal, and microwave
• A 240-volt range or cooktop circuit, sized to the appliance, plus a separate circuit if the wall oven is going somewhere else
• GFCI protection on countertop and island receptacles, and arc-fault protection where required
• Island and peninsula power, which has to be planned with the cabinet maker because there is often only one workable location
• Lighting in layers: recessed for general light, pendants over the island, and under-cabinet for the counters

Under-cabinet lighting is worth doing properly rather than with a hardware store kit. We cut and solder continuous runs to fit each cabinet and hardwire them to a switch or dimmer, so there are no gaps, no visible cords, and no plug-in drivers. Details on our custom lighting page.

What a Bathroom Remodel Needs

• GFCI protection on all receptacles, which is the single most common thing missing in older Valley bathrooms
• A dedicated circuit for the receptacles, separate from the lighting
• Proper exhaust ventilation, correctly sized and vented outside rather than into the attic, on a timer or humidity sensor
• Vanity lighting placed to light a face rather than the top of a head, which is a fixture-placement decision made at rough-in
• Wet-rated fixtures in and over showers and tubs
• Heated floor and mirror circuits, if those are in the plan, because both need to be run before tile

The Panel Question

A kitchen remodel usually adds several circuits to a house. If your panel is full, or already carrying an AC system and an EV charger, that is a conversation to have at the start of the project rather than the middle.

Sometimes the answer is a subpanel. Sometimes it is a replacement. Not every remodel triggers one. But finding out at demo is much better than finding out the week the cabinets arrive. More on our panel replacement page.

What We Find Behind Old Walls

Open walls are the only time some of this is visible, and remodels are when we catch it:

• Single strand aluminum branch wiring in homes wired in the 1960s and 1970s, which is a genuine fire risk at connections and should be addressed while the walls are open. We wrote about it in detail here: aluminum wiring in older Phoenix homes.
• Ungrounded two-wire circuits feeding outlets that somebody replaced with three-prong receptacles
• Junction boxes buried in walls with no access, which is both a code problem and a reliability problem
• Circuits daisy-chained across rooms in ways that make no sense until you map them
• Backstabbed devices that have been loosening for thirty years

None of this is a reason to panic, but all of it is much cheaper to fix while the walls are already open.

Beyond Kitchens and Baths

Walk it first, plan the circuits against what the space will actually be used for, and rough it in before anything closes up.

Two ways. Send us blueprints or a designer's plan and we will put together a bid from the drawings. Or have us out for a walkthrough, which costs nothing, and we will talk through the scope in the actual space. For most homeowners the walkthrough is more useful, because plans rarely show where the existing circuits are.

How We Work With Homeowners and Contractors

• We coordinate with the other trades. Cabinets, tile, plumbing, and drywall all have a claim on the same schedule.
• We rough in for the finished design. Fixture placement gets planned against the actual cabinet and vanity layout, not a guess.
• Honest about what we find. If the wiring behind your wall needs attention, you get told, along with what happens if you leave it.
• Clean, code-compliant work. Correct circuits, proper protection, labeled panel.
