There is a moment every Valley homeowner with an evaporative cooler eventually reaches. Usually it lands in early July, when the dew point climbs and the swamp cooler stops being air conditioning and starts being a very loud humidifier. That is when people start pricing refrigerated air.
Most of the conversation you will have about that switch is about equipment: tons, SEER, package unit versus split system. What tends to get discovered later, sometimes after a deposit is already down, is the electrical side. Going from a swamp cooler to refrigerated AC is one of the largest single load increases you can add to an Arizona house, and your panel gets a vote.
An evaporative cooler is a fan and a small pump. It runs on 120 volts and typically draws somewhere in the neighborhood of five to eight amps, which is why yours has been living happily on an ordinary circuit for thirty years without anyone thinking about it.
Refrigerated air is a compressor. A three to five ton condenser runs on 240 volts, and depending on the equipment it commonly wants a circuit in the twenty to forty-five amp range. If the system includes electric strip heat in the air handler, that is a second 240-volt circuit that can call for thirty to sixty amps on its own.
The exact numbers come off the equipment nameplate, specifically the minimum circuit ampacity and the maximum overcurrent protection. That plate, not a chart and not a rule of thumb, is what the circuit gets sized to. But the shape of it is always the same: you are replacing a small 120-volt load with one or two substantial 240-volt loads, and that is a real change to your service.
Before anyone talks about equipment, somebody should do a load calculation on your house. That is the math that adds up your service size against everything already connected plus what you are about to add, and it is the difference between an install that goes smoothly and one that stalls halfway through.
Three things we look at on these jobs:
Service size. Most homes that still have a swamp cooler were built when the load expectations were different. If you are on a smaller service and you are adding a compressor and possibly strip heat, that service may not carry it.
Physical space in the panel. Even on an adequate service, you need room for one or two new double-pole breakers. Panels that are already full of tandems and add-ons do not have that room, and stacking more into them is how we end up back at your house for a different reason.
Condition. Some of the panels sitting on these houses are ones nobody should be adding a compressor to regardless of the math. If yours is a brand with a known history, that changes the plan. We covered which ones and why in our post on Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels in Arizona.
If a panel replacement turns out to be part of this, a standard 200-amp like-for-like replacement in the Valley generally runs $5,200 to $6,500. If the meter base has to go with it and you are getting a full service replacement with a new all-in-one meter and panel, that is typically $6,400 to $8,750. We would rather tell you that up front, while you are still planning, than have it surface as a surprise the week your equipment is scheduled. Worth saying plainly: not every conversion needs a panel. Plenty of houses have the capacity and the space and we simply add the circuits. The point is that somebody should confirm it before you buy equipment, not after.
On a typical conversion, the electrical scope looks like this.
A new dedicated 240-volt circuit runs from the panel to the outdoor condenser, sized to the nameplate. A disconnect gets mounted within sight of that unit, because code requires a technician to be able to kill power at the equipment, and a weatherproof whip carries power the last few feet into the machine. Inside, the air handler or furnace needs its own circuit, and if the system carries electric heat that circuit is considerably larger. Then there is the small stuff that adds up: thermostat cable to the new equipment location, which is frequently not where the old cooler thermostat lived, and power for a condensate pump if the drain cannot run by gravity.
This is the part that gets skipped on budget conversions and it bothers us every time we find it.
When the swamp cooler comes off the roof, its circuit is still there, still energized, now feeding a cut cable end sitting in an attic or terminating at an abandoned roof curb. Sometimes it has been wire-nutted and pushed into a junction box that nobody labeled. Sometimes it is just capped and left.
That circuit should be properly terminated or removed, and the breaker feeding it dealt with. There is also a hole in your roof where the cooler sat, and while patching it is not our trade, it needs to be part of somebody's scope. Ask who is handling it before the crane shows up, not after.
A lot of Valley conversions go with a package unit set on the roof, often on or near the existing cooler opening, because the ductwork is already up there. Others go with a conventional split system: condenser on a pad beside the house, air handler in the attic or a closet.
The electrical implications differ. A package unit generally takes a single 240-volt circuit and needs a disconnect at the unit on the roof, which means the run goes up rather than out, and it means safe roof access for whoever services it later. A split system needs the run out to the pad plus a separate circuit indoors for the air handler.
Neither is automatically better. But the routing, the amount of conductor, and the labor to get power where it needs to go are genuinely different between the two, so if you are getting quotes on both, make sure the electrical scope is quoted on both.
Nobody likes this part, so we will be straight about it. Refrigerated air uses substantially more electricity than an evaporative cooler. You are gaining real comfort and real humidity control through monsoon season, and you are trading a low-draw fan for a compressor that runs long cycles in triple-digit heat.
The upside is that you now have something you can actually manage. Once you are on refrigerated air, your SRP or APS rate plan matters much more than it used to, and pre-cooling ahead of on-peak hours becomes a lever that works. On a clean conversion, the HVAC contractor sizes the system for your house, sets the equipment, handles the ductwork transition from cooler ducting to a proper supply and return system, runs the refrigerant lines, pulls the vacuum, charges it, and commissions it. The licensed electrician handles the load calculation, the panel work if any, the dedicated circuits, the disconnect, and the terminations at both ends.
When one crew quietly absorbs the other crew's half, that is where we find undersized breakers, missing disconnects, and new compressors fed off circuits that were never meant to carry them. Call us before you sign anything if your house still has a swamp cooler and you are pricing refrigerated air, especially if your panel is original to the house, if it is already full, or if you have no idea what size service you have. A load calculation early is the cheapest step in this entire project and it is the one that keeps the timeline honest.
Call us during the project if your HVAC quote says electrical by others and nobody has explained what that covers. And call us after, if a conversion was done without a disconnect at the unit, if the old cooler circuit was left live in the attic, or if the new system has been tripping its breaker since the day it went in.
